Ralph Yates & Sons was founded in 1845 by Ralph Yates, who moved from Leeds to Malton with less than £5 in his pocket.
Ralph Yates set up the Derwent Foundry in Railway Street which in those days was known as Water Lane.
The Blacksmith and Foundry business quickly grew, and this prompted expansions for the store into agricultural machinery manufacture. In 1895 the current shop was built as a warehouse with space to keep and display all the Iron Moulds until they were required at the foundry.
Throughout the 20th century, the business grew and worked very closely with the farming community which was, and continues to be, a major part of the local economy.
From the early 1960’s the company gradually moved the emphasis of its business away from manufacture and over to retail.
The business grew and developed into a Department Store with Country Clothing and Footwear, DIY, Toys, Furniture, Animal Health and Feeds, Hardware, Electrical Goods, Bicycles and Accessories, Garden Centre, Multi-fuel Stoves and General Household Departments.
Ralph Yates and Sons Ltd remains one of the few traditional Department Stores in the area encompassing traditional values of quality and service coupled with a competitive pricing policy. Customers are important to us and they come back to us regularly in store and online.

Since then, the business has developed into a much-loved traditional Yorkshire department store. As described by TV Chef James Martin as 'Malton's very own Aladdin's Cave.' To be honest if we don't sell it, then you probably don't need it.
Within our store you will find many different departments including Clothing, Footwear, Cycles, DIY, White Goods, Animal Health and our very own Garden Centre, situated just across the road from our main store. We also sell many different big brand names including Barbour, Schoffel, Bosch, Beko, Lego, Tractor Ted, Giant Bikes, Hunter, Crew and many more.
We are also part of the Euronics group selling a wide range of home appliances from kettles and toasters to washing machines and fridge freezers. Offering Free local delivery for orders over £50.
